The exhibition intends to produce kilims in collaboration with weavers by way of instructions open for interpretation rather than imposing a completed and predetermined design ordered to be woven. In this relationship, the instructor and the weaver likely become co-authors of the kilim.
Written or visual instructions prepared by artists, architects and designers are interpreted by the weavers and translated into kilims. This exercise alters the conventional designer-contractor relationships and consequently their modes of production, opening up a field of expression for the weaver’s world while anonymizing the designer’s identity.
The exceptional visual language that emerges in produced kilims and its frank and unanticipated expressions can be interpreted as the reflection of the weaver’s world.
The final encounter with the produced kilims in this exhibition initiates another process which encourages the questioning and the re-evaluation of the roles and mechanisms of interaction among the actors of kilim making.
